Write a Grant for iMi

April 9, 2009 · 2 Comments

If you’re interested in obtaining iMentor Interactive for your organization but need financial support, you may want to try a strategy that several of our members have employed: Writing a grant request that demonstrates the impact iMi can generate for your mentoring program.

To help you with this pursuit, we’ve put together some sample language that you can easily incorporate into your request. And feel free to include screenshots from our website to illustrate the platform’s features. Or direct your funder to our video demonstration.

Granted, it’s a tough funding environment right now. But we’re happy to help support your grant in any way we can.

Good luck!

Funding Watch: Making Sense of Federal Mentoring Funds

April 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

If you belong to as many mailing lists as we do, you’ve no doubt received a deluge of emails talking about OJJDP grant funding, new stimulus funds for school-based initiatives, and other mentoring grant opportunities.

But the questions remains: How can mentoring programs take advantage of these funds? The following mentoring grant opportunities have deadlines within the next month, and are offering funds to youth mentoring organizations.

The most prominent federal funding initiative comes from the U.S. Department of Justice, the OJJDP FY 09 Recovery Act National Youth Mentoring Programs. This funding is designated for organizations have a national impact with their youth mentoring programs. The deadline for this opportunity is APRIL 20, 2009.

As we mentioned in a previous post, the National Science Foundation is currently accepting applications for organizations “outstanding mentoring efforts that enhance the participation of groups (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities) that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.” Applications are due APRIL 21, 2009.

The U.S. Center for Substance Abuse Prevention release a Request for Applications (Drug Free Communities Mentoring Program) for mentoring programs that seek to “reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse.” Applications are due on APRIL24, 2009.

Mentoring Children of Prisoners: Caregiver’s Choice is an ongoing federal initiative which is provided in partnership with the National Mentoring Partnership. The program offers funds for mentoring relationships involving children with at least one parent/guardian who is currently incarcerated. **This is related to the Administration for Children’s Services Mentoring Children of Prisoners grant program, which is not accepting applications at this time.

These are the major initiatives currently accepting applications, but as we’re learning new funding is becoming available all the time. We’ll update the blog as info becomes available, but there are a number of great resources to keep you informed about funding updates:

From the Mouths of Mentees

April 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

mentee“As a teenager, freedom of speech means a lot to me. Being able to express myself means that I can contribute to change, influence others, and of course, have more power in a society ruled by adults. If the First Amendment was overturned and I no longer had my freedom of speech, I would express myself regardless of the consequences as long as I do it for an issue that matters a lot to me.”
